2006 – 2010 - Blue Bear and its Partners win the MoD Grand Challenge

In 2006, the UK MoD announced a competition to spur technology that would help UK troops detect threats in urban environments. Unmanned systems were to be deployed from a forward operating base to search for threats in a designated urban area with as much autonomy as possible.

There were 14 entries to this competition of whom Blue Bear and Partners were declared the overall winners.Blue Bear developed two sophisticated UAV systems carrying an array of sensors as part of an integrated threat detection solution:
  • A High Level UAV (HLUAV), tasked to fly high above the search area and identify potential threats.
  • A Low Level" BMAV (BBSR Mini Air Vehicle) tasked to fly low over urban rooftops to verify perceived threats.
Blue Bear and partners have received several subsequent MoD contracts to further develop this system.

Partners:
  • Selex Galileo
  • Stellar Research Services
  • TRW Conekt
  • Marshall System Design Group
  • Cranfield University
As a result of being part of the MoD Grand Challenge winning team, Blue Bear were selected to receive a prestigious award for innovative engineering. The Institution of Engineering and Technology Award is an international award judged by engineering experts which recognises the depth and breadth of innovative work being carried out across all areas of engineering and technology. The award was presented by Phillipa Forrester at the finale of the competition.
